Permits??

This post is going to be totally random, but it is something that bothers the heck out of me, and I needed to complain, and I also wanted to know what you all thought of it...

What does it take to get a handicap permit? do you really have to be handicap?..do you actually ever see anyone use the handicap parking spots that actually are handicap??

NOT ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This irritates the heck out of me, So there are wayyyy to many parking spots for handicap people..like 20 in a parking lot..lets say Winco is a little excessive! Think about how many times maybe you have drove around a parking lot looking for parking and there is no-where to park except 2 miles away at the end of the parking lot..and then you look to the handicap spot..and who gets out..but 2 young people, pretty much skipping/running into the store with nothing wrong! Honestly, I really think I have seen a legit handicap person pull in a spot and get out like 3 times, in my whole life! Do you ever see anyone that actually is handicap?

This bothered me so bad that yesterday I looked at the Idaho DMV website and here is what I found:

Are you Eligible:

Any disabled persons includes any person who is unable to walk 200 feet or more unassisted by another person, without the aid of a walker, crutches, braces, prosthetic device,or wheelchair,or without great difficultly or discomfort due to any of the following impairment types: neuralgic, orthopedic, respiratory, cardiac, arthritic, blindness,or the loss of function,or absence of limb or limbs.

How bout me...what about prego mom's or single parents who have 4 kids in tow, and have to park 2 miles away and walk through a busy parking lot, trying to make sure their kids dont get hit by a crazy person who thinks they can just back out of a spot without looking?!?!? Shouldnt I get be able to get a permit? All you need is for your doctor to sign a piece of paper..what a joke..but Idaho doesnt care..they make money off of you..

ok, so how many people do you see actaully have any of those,Im not saying everyone that parks....lies about it..but if someone were you have any of those dissablitlies..I think you would be able to tell. And when people jump out of their cars, with NOTHING wrong, It makes my blood boil!! Even old people...just cause your old doesnt mean you should get a permit!

And while I am on the subject, old people..maybe people that are 65 plus..should have to take a driving test, written and physical...to make sure they are still capable to driving, and not causing accidents cause they drive 10 miles an hour and slam on the breaks when no-one is around!

What do you think?

OK Trac settle down girl, settle down the baby will be here soon - Ha ha.
I have to tell you this made me laugh for one big reason - I always had this argument when I was pregnant. Every.Single.Time!!

I mean you are big, you are uncomfortable, you haven't slept, you feel like poo, you have a sciatic nerve problem and your ankles are swollen but you still have to walk a mile everywhere you park.

Yeah, I am with you! I totally think all pregnant women should get handicapped parking!! I have always thought so.

I do like that at some stores they are starting to have "pregnant or parental" parking spots. Maybe they just need more of those?

Oh and P.S. in my last comment when I said "you" I meant "me".!

You are funny. But, I totally agree. In fact, I even parked illegally in a handicapped spot today so I could return my Redbox.

Every time I go to the store I think, does "pregnant" count as "handicapped?" I think they should issue temporary handicap stickers for temporary conditions, such as injuries or pregnancy. At lest Babies-R-Us has a good idea with "stork parking."

Ok guys, you know I gotta leave a comment on this!!! LOL - Warning: This may get LONG!
As you may have guessed, we have a handicapped parking tag for Jordyn (she is permanently in a wheelchair). In some ways, it is eye opening being on the other side... the ones WITH the handicapped tag.
Tracy you are right - I still see lots of people parking in handicapped spots that do not look handicapped or people parking in them with NO handicapped tag at all (for long periods of time). Anyone think you should report this??(the ones with no tag) I can't decide, but sometimes I'm tempted.

But, I have to say that I do see lots of people in wheelchairs using them too.
And yes, sometimes I see lots of empty spaces.... except occasionally at Walmart and large events, funny how all those spots are always taken :)
I think most businesses will NEVER need all the handicapped spaces they have, but it's a law how many handicapped spaces are needed per regular space.

I also firmly believe there are LOTS of people out there abusing the use of their handicapped tags.... it's just a fact! Just think, people could be stealing them out of someones car and using it! Or maybe even doctors freely signing the paperwork when they shouldn't! However, just because they don't look handicapped does not mean they aren't, you never know their situation.

Tracy, have you ever thought of asking your doctor for a temporary one? They do issue those, they are the red ones you sometimes see. I'm not sure if they would do it or not, but it's worth a try! Maybe you would qualify under orthopedic discomfort! LOL

And I agree with the others. I know a couple of our grocery stores in our town have the parent/pregnancy spots also which is good.

Sadly, there are a lot more handicapped people then pregnant women! :)

One more thing to think about. If you have a handicapped sticker it's not always a "walk in the park". I've been written nasty notes on my car from other handicapped drivers. Sometimes the parking lots are FULL and we park far way with no space to get her in and out. So, I guess people abusing the system are ruining it for the abled people AND the disabled people too!
Anywho, I'm rambling. Just thought I would mention my opinion since we use the handicapped spots all the time! LOL

Sorry, one more thing. I started "googling" about getting a handicapped parking tag for pregnant women. Have you done this yet? Very interesting. Some states have recently passed legislation allowing pregnant women to use them during the third trimester. Other states rejected it. Maybe you should pursue it in Idaho!?

oh aaaaa-freakin-men, sista! :P and i am ALLLLLL about people who are 65+ taking their driving tests again. I think that once you reach 70, it should be EVERY year, and that once you're 80 they should TAKE AWAY YOUR LICENSE! seriously, i HAAAATE old people driving! makes me SO mad!

Traci, I agree there are alot of handicapped parking spots. Here in NY we do have stork parking. Don't they have them in Idaho, or are they all taken up?

Ha! My aunt is a doctor - the kind that treats people with diabetes. She says sometimes when her patients ask her to sign the handicap parking form, she tells them no - she'd really rather they park in the very back of the lot and burn calories walking to the store. :) She doesn't live in ID though. too bad for you and your cause.
